Collaborations with Poets, Artists, Photographers

So my son, Jonah Peake, had this idea…
…to write a poem every day, beginning in March 2020, right when the coronavirus was making everyone “Stay Safe/Stay Home” and practice physical distancing. He asked me to illustrate some of them, and I offered him a collage of a coffee mug as a possible style. He loved it, and wanted more. A No Staycation collaboration was born!
My poet friend, Gordon Korstange, had this idea…
…to do something more tangible than just go out to lunch once a week and talk. Because I had had a collaborative art-making experience in my recent past, I suggested we trade word and image in a collaborative way. That primitive exchange in 2015 became a multi-year collage-making experience, which eventually led to writing about each collage as if it were an art label on the wall next to the artwork. The “artist” of each collage needed a name, as did the “art curator” describing it, and a place for the art to hang. What evolved was a make-believe town of Happenstance, VT with fictional denizens and their favorite artist, GorMatt StrangePeak, whose work was curated by Jayne Doescent.
And the chance encounter at a fundraising event of a Photographer, Yevette Hendler, resulted in…
…a three hour photo shoot on a sunny October afternoon with me posing for her in nature au natural. Because that went so well, we did a second collaborative session with another model and me posing against a blue backdrop, and a third series, with another model and me, entitled, New England Rustic. one single cactus
6/30/20
one single cactus
stands all alone
in a field of grass
this is its home
but was the cactus here first?
and the grass grew up later?
did a creature bring the seeds
to this unique spot in nature?
it’s impossible to tell
the exact reason it’s here
maybe that’s not the point
the answer should be unclear
step back in the moment
enjoy the cactus’ flower hat
in the tall blades of grass
nothing more beautiful than that
patio problems
4/1/20
work from home
a lovely patio
drinking sun
watching the wind blow
all my papers
across the yard
chasing and chasing
this game is hard
one stuck in a tree
and out of reach
understanding the lessons
paperweights teach
zoom meeting connecting
and i have no notes
i hope this goes well
let’s get started folks
how we fry an egg
6/16/20
first step make bacon
cook it up nice and crispy
make sure to have patience
it will be done in a jiffy
it should sizzle and crack
if the temp is just right
have patience and watch it
breakfast nearly in sight
next to the bacon
a small space will do
a dollop of oil
and a cracked egg or two
at some point we flip them
but that’s up to you
don’t cook up the middle
for eggs runny with goo
a dash of some spices
and salt at the end
it’s time to eat breakfast
grab a chair, grab a friend
there are 3
5/31/20
it was a sunday
and the day felt long
riots continue
we must stay strong
the protest gains strength
people out in the street
i believe in the cause
but masks and 6 feet
there might be 2 viruses
both strong and quite deadly
one literal version
the other acts inhumanly
but if we zoom out
one has been excluded
there are 3 viruses
when racism is included

I like the way the blue string against the blue background segments the figures’ forms.
